LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Three runs in the ninth completed a walk-off, come from behind victory as the Arizona Western Matadors opened the 2019 Season with a 4-3 win over the San Jacinto Gators at the CSN Border Battle.
The Matadors trailed the entire game as the Gators tallied single runs in each of the first two innings against AWC starter Ramon Miranda. A solo homer in the first and a balk set the Mats down two heading into the bottom of the second.
AWC then got on the board when Cristian Castellanos scored on a passed ball, cutting the deficit in half.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the eighth when the Gators added an insurance run on an RBI double.
But the Matador rally came furious in the ninth as Castellanos singled to start the inning. Robbie Wilkes then walked, forcing pinch runner Arjun Huerta up to second.
They advanced to second and third on Tyson Zamora’s sacrifice bunt. Oliver Frias pushed across a run and reached second on an error by the Gators shortstop.
With the tying run on third and winning run on second, Zach Huffins grounded out to tie the game.
Carlos Arellano delivered the game winning hit, plating Frias, and giving the Mats a 1-0 start to the season.
The Mats continue the CSN Border Battle on Saturday with a pair of games against Eastern Utah at 11:30am MST and then at 2:30pm MST against Cochise.
