Matadors Survive Slugfest, Eliminate Pima

TUCSON, Ariz--- Up by six runs, the Arizona Western Matadors saw their lead evaporate before finding enough extra offense to hold on to a 13-12 over the host Pima Aztecs in a Region I Semifinal elimination game Friday afternoon at the Aztec Baseball Field.

The Matadors held on tight against a team that scored 22 runs in two loses on the day at their home field.

Homer Dooms Mats in Region Semifinal Loss to Yavapai

TUCSON, Ariz---A three-run homer in the fifth inning set the Arizona Western Matadors (31-14 overall, 23-11 ACCAC) back to a place even a furious ninth inning rally could not overcome in a 5-3 loss to the Yavapai RoughRiders (28-18 overall, 22-14 ACCAC) in the Region I Semifinal opener at Aztec Field.

The Matadors will now await the loser of Friday's matchup between Yavapai and Pima. AWC needs to win three games to advance to the Region I Finals next weekend.

Sweep of Scottsdale Locks Up 3rd Seed

YUMA, Ariz---After being down five runs heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Arizona Western Matadors (31-13 overall, 23-11 ACCAC) turned things around to net a sweep of the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (16-20 overall, 16-20 ACCAC) Saturday afternoon at Kammann Field on Sophomore Day.

The win clinches the third seed, and a trip to Tucson next week, in the Region I, Division I Playoffs.

Shutouts For and Against in Split at Pima

TUCSON, Ariz---The overcast, rainy day proved ominous for offenses as the Arizona Western Matadors (29-13 overall, 21-11 ACCAC) shutout the Pima Aztecs (36-10 overall, 27-9 ACCAC) before being held scoreless in a split Tuesday afternoon.

Bobby Vath continued to roll on the mound and was armed with Delano Selassa's early RBI knock, allowing him to settle in, cruising to the 5-0 win.

Offense Comes Alive in Sweep at Eastern

THATCHER, Ariz---Utilizing 18 runs over the course of 16 innings, the Arizona Western Matadors (28-12 overall, 20-10 ACCAC) swept Saturday's double-header on the road against the host Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (3-21 overall, 3-21 ACCAC) to move into third place in the ACCAC standings.

Oliver Frias was 6-8 on the day with six RBI and a home run to spark the offense while Juan Salazar delivered a home run in each game.
