Hello, Goodbye

YUMA, Ariz. – Get Keisean Nixon in the open field with the ball, and good things happen. The Arizona Western College defensive back averaged 79 yards per kickoff return in a huge win against Mesa Community College. He was named the NJCAA Special Teams Player of the Week for his outstanding work.

Nixon finished with 316 return yards and a pair of crucial touchdowns in the 45-21 win. He returned back-to-back kickoffs for touchdowns to erase a pair of Mesa leads. Plus, his 72 yard return of the second half kickoff set the offense up to score again as the team built a 31-14 lead.

On the season, Nixon has returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns in addition to the two return touchdowns. He has also broken up four passes and has 20 tackles, one sack and four tackles for loss. The sophomore is part of a stifling Matador defense that ranks second in the country in points allowed per game (8.1).

Nixon is the second Matador to earn NJCAA Player of the Week honors this season. Defensive end Chris Favoroso was named the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week after serving as a one-man wrecking crew in the team’s season-opening win against Iowa Western.

The second-ranked Matadors close the regular season at Scottsdale Community College on Saturday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and the game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,400 certificates and degrees in 2015-16.
